The Insiders Scoop on Sibos Boston 2014

As a relative newbie to the exciting but complex world of Sibos, I thought it would be best to go straight to the source to really understand what is on offer this year, and what makes Boston such a great place to host the “world’s premier financial services conference”.

So we reached out to SWIFT and got an amazing opportunity to speak to Sven Bossu - Head of Sibos, in an exclusive video interview about Sibos 2014. I’ve done a fair amount of interviews in my time, but honestly, Sven is one of the most affable and well-prepared people I’ve ever had the pleasure of talking to. (Even our cameraman, Ben, commented on his easy manner and professionalism in front of the camera). Knowing that time was precious, we got down straight down to business discussing a plethora of areas in the course of our one hour chat. Time just flew by as we covered everything from why Sibos is such an important conference in the FS industry to Instagram competitions, and the really BIG news of Bill Gates being the closing plenary speaker. By the time Sven had to jump on his Eurostar to Brussels, I was not only a believer but also genuinely very excited to be part of Sibos Boston 2014. (Sven had particularly sold me on the seafood angle, more on that later).

So here I was thinking that Sibos was just a payments and transaction banking conference; but it's actually so much more than that. A global financial services conference where over 7000 senior level industry experts gather to learn, exchange ideas, network and do business, Sibos has not only grown in size and awareness, but most importantly, in topic scope. To get Bill Gates to come and talk about financial inclusion in developing nations on the inaugural “Change Day” is a far cry from the days of traditional banking events. It was exciting to hear how the programme is developing for 2014 and that investment management is going to be a focus area for the conference.

The US base for Sibos 2014 hopes to bring a broader audience to the conference while delivering a technologically-driven event, which will look at a range of topics such as regulation, cyber-security and the impact of innovation in the FS industry as a whole. Interestingly, the Boston location will play a huge part in many aspects of Sibos, from the cuisine to the local sponsored charity to the elevated emphasis on the digital and social media initiatives. In all my enthusiasm during our chat, I somehow agreed to partake in the charity “fun run” as well. We’ll have to see how I fare with that one when the day comes!

Sven discussed how important it is that Sibos moves with the times and leverages social media platforms such as Twitter and Instagram, not only to promote the conference but also to build greater engagement with delegates. It’s a great idea to have an Instagram competition at a banking conference, and I know I will personally be hashtagging #Sibos at a crazy rate when I’m there! This new idea just goes to show how far Sibos has come, with an appetite to reach everyone from technologists, investment bankers, compliance teams, the press, to of course, FS marketers. It is important that Sibos still retains and holds on to its core values but also that it understands the importance of being relevant in the ever-changing, fast-paced world in which we live and work.

It was genuinely an enjoyable experience to hear and learn more about Sibos, specifically what Boston brings and what will make 2014 the best year yet! I’m looking forward to the lobster rolls, meeting lots of interesting folks in the FS world and, let’s face it, seeing Bill Gates speak live in person.
